EXPERIENCE DESIGNER

Giao-Chau Ly

Giao-Chau is a Los Angeles based designer that specializes in narrative storytelling and experiential design.  Her background is in theater where she worked as a designer, painter and props master for over 10 years in San Francisco, Chicago and New York.  After getting her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, she shifted her focus towards film, television and commercials.  Her work focuses on exploring identity: it’s culturally constructed signifiers, methods of production and conflicting perceptions.

She is most interested in building dynamic worlds that shift and shatter assumption.  While in Chicago, she designed a haunted experience based on Dante’s inferno that led visitors through different realms based on our modern day fears and obsessions.  After settling in Los Angeles, Giao-Chau collaborated on a 6 hour live event webcast launching the Audi A3.  The event (called #paidmydues) utilized twitter content submitted in real time to create live art during the broadcast by artists.

In 2016 Insomniac commissioned her to design EDC Town- a refuge from the 300,000 person Electric Daisy Carnival music festival that included a saloon, schoolhouse, theater, post office and 2 temples that have hosted over 600 weddings.  Smirnoff decided to celebrate the one year anniversary of Marriage Equality by launching their #lovewins campaign in one of her temples.

Continuing with this theme, Giao-Chau designed the stage for the first viral Love Has no Labels campaign which garnered the team an Emmy, a Cannes Lion and has had over 60 millions views.

She is currently the production designer on Speechless, an ABC comedy that broke ground by casting a special needs actor in the leading role and realistically portraying the serious and humorous challenges a family faces with a teenager who is disabled.

Selected client list: 20th Century Fox, ABC/ Disney, Warner Brothers, CBS, Yahoo, Sony Pictures, The Ad Council, Insomniac, Audi, Lenovo, Aquafina, Chase Bank, Starbucks, Motorola, Samsung, Pepsi
